Web Based Learning

Whyyyyyy Good Day You Good Looking People. This presentation on Web based Learning is something i am defiantly familiar with at the University level. I was a big fan of taking a lot of courses during the year because I enjoyed working and playing sport s during the Sept-Apr. when i was in University. I would take 21 credit hours during the year and take 9 credit hours during the summer months and a lot of those courses in the summer were Online. I was a huge fan of online courses because they were organized well through web CT and really allowed for students to partake in other things such as work and sports while taking courses. During the summer months I would work full time and still be able to take courses in order to finish my degree on time. I really thought the courses were well run and helped me finish my undergrad degree debt free.
I feel that this experience has helped me understand the presentation that was presented to us, and i would defiantly want the option of online courses offered at the school i am teaching. Online courses give students options which is something schools need to start doing. With the new physical education curriculum it is important to incorporate online courses because it allows for students to fit another course in the timetable. With the mandatory physical education course it takes away one period that students are unable to take a science course or math course that they need later in university. Online courses can help students fit classes they need into the timetable and allow for them to get those extra courses they need.
When I was teaching in the inner city a lot of students had the ability to be good students but were not able to attend classes because they had to work. Majority of students were from unstable homes and needed to work to support themselves. I feel that having online courses can help these students get their diploma and finish courses they have hard time attending due to work and family obligations.

  1. I agree that these are important issues and reasons why online education is good, but I think for some students, they would see it as a coop-out and take online courses because they are easier and more flexible than regular classes, and they don't have to show up every day. For the high achieving students, it is an opportunity for sure, but I think it could easily be abused by some other students.

  2. I agree with what you say Shardy. These online courses could be of great benefit to people who do not have time to attend regular scheduled courses. In todays world its a reality that some families need extra incomes and the teens are looked at to help out. A lot of students today work jobs and school may not be seen as the first priority. These courses are super handy.

Another great use for distant education is those courses that are not offered in schools, at the last school where I student taught there was a student who was taking French through distant education. The presenters also mentioned a new course they are coming out with that has to do with digital photography. A teahcer who may want to learn more about digital photography could offer to teach this after school as an extra credit course, this is something that I would defintiely be interested it. Distant education is a super useful tool which I look forward to utilizing when I start teaching.
